Clovis, Fresno County
Clovis is named for Clovis Cole, a wheat farmer who sold land for a railroad station here in 1891. Within a few years a 42-mile flume was floating lumber down from the Sierra to a mill beside the tracks, and the town grew around it. The old town center keeps that early street grid, now filled with antique stores and a weekly farmers market.
